Maker Space at Macul

One day we went to COBO Hall for a huge expo about technology. It was called MACUL. We were there to talk about Scratch and Tinkercad. 3,000 to 4,000 people came to see what we do in our 3rd grade class. Tons of technology experts came to learn how to use Scratch and Tinkercad. We used the awesome chromebooks we have in our class.

Madden showed a 2nd grade teacher how to make an insect on Tinkercad. Eliana showed a lot of people her video on Scratch. Brandon showed his video game to some people and they all loved his game. Zoe showed people how to use Tinkercad. We had so much fun and we had such a great. We want to go there and present again and again!

Scratch Pad Project

We love to do coding! In scratch we have been working on games. We have scratch pad to learn some moves for the sprite to do before we get to our final project of creating our own video game. Two of the moves is talking with a sprite and changing the color of the sprite.

In scratch you can do many things. You can also make the sprite spin in a bunch of circles. You can change the background and the sprite. We all love scratch! We love it because it is really fun! You can make it do almost anything you want and you can even make it sing opera! So that is why scratch ROCKS!!!

Reading Day!

On April 2 our whole school had reading day! We got to read all day which was fun!

When we got to school, the desks were pushed back for us to put the blankets down. It was a half day so no math!!! We got to bring slippers, a blanket, and a small stuffed buddy or a small pillow. First we got to see our kindergarten buddies and read with them for the last time in reading month. We also made a certificate for reading for our buddy and they made one for us.

Then we had snack and went to art and finished our projects. When we got back to the room, some of us went to read around the school. We got to read in the media center or fine arts wing. The others got to build a fort in the classroom.

The halls where crowded with excited readers. It was my favorite day! Did we mention we got to wear our pj's?! How we made the fort was with chairs and the blankets from home and some pillows or a stuffed buddy. We also got to go in it and play Minecraft. I think next year it will be just the same but no Minecraft.

Now you see why reading day was the best day ever!!! Turns out reading day was actually a lot of fun.

Reading Month!

Did you know March was reading month? Well it was!! Here are some of the things we did.

For the first week we read with our kindergarten buddies which was really fun. We also made a really cool door cover and we all put our favorite books on it.

The 2nd week was fun too. We did no electronics starting on Monday for Screen Time Shut Down.  You had to turn in at least one ticket which meant you shut down screen time for that whole day. At the end of the week Bella and Eliana have won the award of a gift card that had 10 dollars in it to buy a book at Barnes and Nobles.

The next week we did reading with are buddies and we had to fill a survey about reading. We used that survey for math where we were learning about graphs.  Both our buddies and us took the survey on our iPads.

After that week we had a book mark contest.  Everyone decorated a book mark for reading month.  The class voted on all of them and we picked one winner.  Everyone will get a copy of the winning book mark!

The last week we made bookmarks for our buddies and they made them for us and on the same day we got to read around the school, and we got to wear our pajamas.

That is what we did in reading month.

Our class is working on collecting data to organize and analyze.  If you would please take a few minutes to answer our surveys, we'd really appreciate it!

There are three surveys and each has three questions.

Thank you!

Minecraft Matters!

We have been using MinecraftEDU in the classroom for nearly three months. Yet, I still get giddy when the class logs in, as the enthusiasm has only built as time goes on. The Thinkers are constantly making connections between Minecraft and just about everything we do. I'm seeing improved communication skills, which have transferred to all areas in school. The questions the Thinkers ask, the problems they face, and the solutions they create are a testament to how much MinecraftEDU has impacted our learning across the board.  But I'll let some of the Thinkers explain that....

Pioneer Days Field Trip

By Naeem & Skylar

We went on an awesome field trip to the Nature Center where we got to go into the woods and visit the log cabin and barn. We all loved the fact that we got to dress like a pioneer..

We had a fantastic time! We got to make cookies and play with old fashioned dolls. One of them was creepy because it's head was made out of a dried apples. We also got to use a pump to get water from the well. We dipped candles by hand by dipping the strings in hot wax. We made cookies that cooked in an old fashioned stove.

Then we went to the barn and used tools like an old fashioned saw, a sharpening wheel, a hole tool, and a peg maker. We even used an old tool that made it easy to carry a heavy log around the barn! When you are using the saw someone else has to sit down on the log so it doesn’t move and then 2 people pull back and forth to saw. After we used the tools we even got to play a little bit on the rope swing! It was a great field trip!

Fraction Fun!

There was a math unit that we learned about where we studied fractions.  It was so much fun!

One of the first things we got to do was eat smarties after we used them for fractions.  We had to organize the smarties into colors and then write the fraction for each color.  Then we had to compare the fractions for the different colors.

We made our own set of fraction fringe.  That is a tool that helps us see different things about fractions, like how 2/8 is the same as 1/4 and so on.

Fractions were not as hard as we thought and it was fun to  learn about them!

DIA Day!

This is one of the ONLY things at the DIA that you can touch!

We had fun playing Eye Spy in the different galleries.

We used the See, Think, Wonder routine to learn more about the art.

It was awesome seeing the Native American artifacts that we learned about!

It was a really fun day at the DIA!

Valentine Action Project!

By Kora and Mustafa

On Valentine's Day we all made Valentine cards for Meals on Wheels.  It was part of Do Something dot org's projects.  We all got to design our own cards. The valentine cards were funny and pretty. We could only use certain objects such as hearts, flowers, markers, glue sticks, colored pencils and scissors, and we also colored them.

Everybody had to use these same materials. We all thought of excellent ways to use the same materials differently.

We put all of our cards together and took a picture of them.  All of them were nice and some hearts had mustaches and legs and hands. They were all addressed to Meals and Wheels in Howell Michigan.

Down on the Farm!

By Hannah & Ewan

We went on a field trip to the farm in February.  It was pretty cold out there!  Especially when we were in the barn!

At the farm we talked about the space and area for when they are growing their plants. There were posters that had questions that we had to answer.   It was all using math!

We measured out different ingredients to make recipes.  We had to use fractions for that!  We did math story problems about all sorts of things that the farm does every day.
We also talked about how many eggs the chickens lay in a day and did math with that. Also we learned about area and perimeter. Next we found out if a horse was a pony by measuring in something called hands.  Lastly we talked about natural resources and what we use them for. The day at the farm was awesome!!

Printing in 3D!

The 3D printer finally came!  It is so neat!  It was hard to concentrate on our essays when it was being set up.

We had to get creative because the parts that are supposed to hold the filament on didn't fit.

Now we get to learn how to make things to print on our new printer!

Longhouses!

By Madden and Masah

Our first project in Minecraft was to build Native American longhouses. Before we could start building, we had to read about the Native Americans that lived in Michigan. We read about the there fires - the Ojibway, the Ottawa, and the Potowatomi.

We had to use math to make our Longhouses. We built them to scale, which means that they had to be 200 feet long and 25 feet wide. Since we couldn't make them that long, we had to figure out what we could do. We calculated that if each block in Minecraft was five feet, then we would need 40 blocks for the length and the width of the longhouses had to be 5 blocks.
Inside we had to make sure the longhouses were like they really were back then. We had a rubric that helped us with that. The longhouse had to be divided for different families. Each section had to have a fire, and there had to be an opening above the fire for smoke. They also had to have a raised sleeping platform and storage. It was a really fun project!

Writing Teams

By Skylar and Naeem

We work together in writing teams to edit our writing. We work in teams of two or three. For this project we were editing research papers on endangered animals that we wrote. We researched animals like the Arctic Fox and different kinds of Leopards. I think we all did pretty well. It was something we wanted to do again and were so sad when we were finished.

Writing takes hard work and many different processes. First you have to get the paper and start writing your ideas down. Then you have to organize your ideas into sentences and paragraphs. Then you show the teacher so she can help you. Next you have to edit it with your team. Finally you can publish it!
