Pioneer Days Field Trip

We went on an awesome field trip to the Nature Center where we got to go into the woods and visit the log cabin and barn. We all loved the fact that we got to dress like a pioneer..



We had a fantastic time! We got to make cookies and play with old fashioned dolls. One of them was creepy because it's head was made out of a dried apples. We also got to use a pump to get water from the well. We dipped candles by hand by dipping the strings in hot wax. We made cookies that cooked in an old fashioned stove.



Then we went to the barn and used tools like an old fashioned saw, a sharpening wheel, a hole tool, and a peg maker. We even used an old tool that made it easy to carry a heavy log around the barn! When you are using the saw someone else has to sit down on the log so it doesn’t move and then 2 people pull back and forth to saw. After we used the tools we even got to play a little bit on the rope swing! It was a great field trip!

Meet the Mayflower

Around Thanksgiving, we were learning about the pilgrims and their voyage.  We went into the hallway. We were learning about the Mayflower so we wanted to measure how long the Mayflower was. At first we didn't have any rulers, we had to experiment and see what we could figure out.

We had to plan how to figure out to measure the length in different ways and spots.  It took a lot of cooperation, but we figured it out.  Measuring with our feet helped, sort of!

Then we got rulers, and we found out that each tile was one foot long and the Mayflower was 110 feet. So we started to count 110 tiles.  In the end we found out how long the Mayflower was,and it almost took up the whole hallway!

After we figured out how long the ship was, we got to see what it was like inside.  We figured out how much room the pilgrims had to sleep. They did not have a lot of space! We found this out by laying down in the hallway.

Our Big Adventure!

One day, our teacher said we were going on a big adventure!  We didn't know what she was talking about!  She took us out the back doors where we go for recess, and we walked past the playground!  We walked toward the middle school next door!

Then we got to a path that led into a nature area in between the schools.  As we walked through the woody area, our teacher told us that we were going to pretend to live like Native Americans.  She explained that Native Americans didn't go to stores to get things they needed, the used things from nature.

We had to look around us as we walked for things that could be helpful for making things like shelter and tools.  It was a lot of fun!  I never realized how much you can make with things you find on the ground!

We had a few big sticks that we thought would be good for a roof pole to tie between trees with vines.  Then we were going to use leaves and branches to make the roof and sides of our house.  It would definitely be a lot of work living when the Native Americans did!
